Juice It Up: Mean Green Smoothie
I am so excited about today's recipe.
Several people have asked me for a smoothie or juice post, so when my friend Ashley was raving about her latest addiction - Joe's Mean Green Smoothie - I had to try it out.

One slight problem...I don't own a juicer. I wanted to post this so badly, but I needed to first find out if I could make it myself. I have a super powerful blender so I put it to the test and was shocked at the results!
Mean Green Smoothie

4 celery stalks
6-8 leaves kale
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1 Tbsp. ginger
1 banana, frozen
1/2 cup almond milk
Directions
Ingredients:

1. Juice all produce except the banana.
2. Put juice into a blender with banana and almond milk
3. Blend for 45 seconds and enjoy!
Ok so here is the fun part...how do you make this WITHOUT a juicer? I know, shocking that I don't own one but I haven't really been that into juicing yet, they are expensive and a pain to clean. Could my blender handle it? YES!

How to Use a Blender as a Juicer
I seriously can't believe this worked, but it did - and there are only 3 things you need to make it happen.
1. A powerful blender
I started by chopping up the produce into 1 inch chunks. Doesn't need to be pretty, this took me all of 20 seconds.
Then I found this article on livestrong.com (awesome site by the way) that gave me the secret: cold water. If you cover the blender blades with cold water before putting in the hard produce, it pulls the harder vegetables into the blades. I was literally jumping up and down in my kitchen.

That's celery, processed in less than 15 seconds. Yes!!
Process the hardest produce first (celery), then move onto cucumber. I started using the pulse option when I added the kale. For the ginger, both Ashley and I cheated (she used minced in a tube, I used some leftover from takeout sushi last night - no judgement).
Afterwards, you will be left with both juice and fiber. You can drink it this way if you want, or you can go 1 extra step to strain it out.
Livestrong suggested using a cheesecloth to squeeze out the juice. I didn't have one, so I decided to see what a strainer and wooden spoon would do...
Totally worked! Just strain the blend over a strainer and into a bowl, pressing down with a wooden spoon to get the juice out. You should be left with just the pulp (this took about a minute) which you can toss. Super easy to clean too.
Then put the juice back into the blender, add the frozen banana and almond milk for your smoothie!
Tip for freezing bananas - I peel and quarter 2-3 bananas at a time and put them in a ziplock bag. Then when I want to use them, I just take out as many chunks as I feel like, and it's easier for the blender to process.
I'm drinking it right now and I already want another one. Thank you Ashley for this amazing juice recipe!
So now the question is, do I still want to buy a juicer? The cleanup from this took no time, but I don't know how juicing harder produce would be. I'll keep you posted.

Wow, I just tried this with a mini-smoothie maker machine (it is so awesome) and the drink came out DELICIOUS! I followed the recipe and used all the ingredients (my son added 4 blackberries). I will definitely be doing this more often. Thanks! BTW, it's an Oster Personal Blender at Target for $30. Great little machine!
ReplyDeleteSo, juicers are an investment, but my Omega 8005 is the bomb! It has encouraged me to juice multiple times a week and I will never go back. The mesh is easier to clean than a strainer to clean, and everything can go in the dishwasher.
