Summer Protein Smoothie with Almond Milk and Flaxseed
This is one of my favorite go-to smoothie recipes for the morning. I know the green smoothie thing is big right now, but sometimes you just want a classic banana fruity smoothie, you know?
This recipe is great because I always have the ingredients on hand (I always keep a bag of frozen mixed berries in my freezer in case I don't have fresh) and it gets you a great dose of fiber and protein.
Ingredients
1 BananaHandful of blueberries, raspberries or blackberries (or all 3!)
1 scoop whey protein (I use Tera's Whey Organic Bourbon Vanilla)
1 scoop ground flaxseed (I use 365 brand flaxseed)
1/4 cup almond milk
3/4 glass of ice cubes
Directions
I have found my blender has an easier time crushing the ice once the banana, milk and berries are pureed, so that's why I choose to do it this way. Also, the flaxseed is super grainy so sometimes when you add it before or with the ice, it flies up everywhere and doesn't get mixed in that well.1. Add banana, berries (fresh or frozen) and almond milk into a blender. Puree until smooth.
2. Add ice and blend on high for another minute.
3. Add whey and flaxseed; blend until smooth and mixed.
Why add whey and flaxseed?
I add whey to my smoothies to get my morning serving of protein. It is also low in carbohydrates and not to mention, bourbon vanilla for breakfast? Yes please.I add flaxseed to increase my fiber intake and they are also an amazing source of omega-3 fatty acids. It's a great way to incorporate flaxseed into your diet without really noticing the taste or texture.
Both of the above ingredients will last you awhile, so keep that in mind when eyeing the price. Tera's whey also comes in sample packages so you can try different flavors or try one out first if you aren't sure you want to buy a whole canister.
Hope you enjoy this one! Check back next week for one of my favorite summer grilling recipes (weather permitting). Have a wonderful weekend and Mother's Day!
