The Fit Girl's Kitchen

So I have this new place in my heart for breakfast, and when I find new delicious breakfastings - well it just makes me jump out of bed and run downstairs some mornings. And instagram the hell out of some breakfast creations before I've even put my contacts in.

I love sleep because it's like a time machine to breakfast
That's what I look in my kitchen every morning.
Enter my new love - muesli.

Bali Breakfast Bowl - muesli, greek yogurt, pineapple, banana, honey

What is muesli you ask?

Muesli (pronounced “muse-lee”) means “stew” or “mix” because it is a mix of various nutritious grains, nuts, seeds and dried fruits.

So is it the same as granola?

I'll let my friends at Seven Sundays answer this one.

While muesli and granola can look very similar, there are some key differences:

  • Muesli is often less toasted (or completely untoasted, as with our Bircher muesli) so it has a more natural, chewier texture and its nutritional value is less impacted by heat and processing
  • Muesli is made with a broad variety of ingredients, whereas most granolas are primarily made up of oats and a smaller number of other ingredients
  • Most mueslis contain far less sugar than a typical granola, relying on the variety of ingredients and fruits to add flavor and sweetness.
  • Many granolas also include processed oils or fats, whereas our muesli has no added oil or fat.

What does it taste like?

Delicious. I was lucky enough to enjoy some many mornings in Bali since it is a breakfast staple there and in other parts of Europe and in New Zealand - which is actually what inspired two adorable Minnesotans to create Seven Sundays and bring some muesli love to the states.

Right? How cute are they?
So when Seven Sundays contacted our local group of foodie fitness bloggers - Olallie MKE - and asked if we wanted some samples to create recipes with and review, I was like YES PLEASE.

And then I picked up my box and almost ate the whole thing in a few days. And flirted with not having enough left to take pictures with. It is the bomb.com.

It just tastes light and clean and I don't feel as weighed down as I do after eating granola. And the SPICES - there are some good spices vibing in this box. And I only had the original.

Plus I dig the fact that it's a midwest company with a grassroots vibe. And their packaging makes me smile:

So we were supposed to come up with a recipe using the museli. And I tried, really I did. I was going to do some coconut almond butter bars or some really awesome looking muffins and then I decided - let's just keep this real.

I really don't like baking. I really am not going to buy a box of this and take time every week to make muesli bars. It's not me. I just want to EAT it. In bowls.

I give you...

Muesli Three Ways

Muesli Bali Style

Muesli + Coconut Greek Yogurt + Pinapple + Bananas + Honey

Muesli Yogi Style

Muesli + Coconut Almond Milk (my other new favorite thing) + Bananas + Chia
(let it soak for like 15 minutes while you brush your teeth and let the dog out. It gets so yummy)

Muesli in a Jar

Muesli in a Jar with Almond Coconut Milk
Museli + Almond/Soy/Coconut Milk in a jar together overnight.
Grab and go, you busy healthypants, you.

Simple. Pour and enjoy. But I do ask that you take the time to savor, enjoy, and eat mindfully - as that is actually what inspired the name for the Seven Sundays brand.

I am so very excited to announce my very first giveaway today on FGK!

Better yet, the organization sponsoring this giveaway is Girls on the Run - an absolutely amazing and inspiring national organization that encourages healthy lifestyles in pre-teen girls.

Today I will be giving away ONE FREE RACE ENTRY to the Girls on the Run Spring 5k, sponsored by GOTR of Greater Milwaukee! The race takes place on Sunday, June 9th at Greenfield Park in West Allis, Wisconsin.

I know that there are many readers not located in Wisconsin or the Midwest, so if you are interested in contributing to GOTR of MKE, you can visit their official webpage or find a local GOTR council near you to participate in an upcoming race or program.

This race is even more amazing because the theme this spring celebrates what it means to be a real-life superhero.

"Superheroes are brave, strong, courageous. In comic books, they come dressed in masks and capes. But in life we know real superheroes come from all walks of life. Girls on the Run of Greater Milwaukee is excited to celebrate real superheroes -- teaching to celebrate the superhero inside themselves!"

To enter the giveaway...

  • Make sure you are available to participate in the run or walk on Sunday, June 9th
  • Leave a comment below and answer this question: "If I had one superpower, it would be ______."
  • OR leave a comment answering that question on the Fit Girl's Kitchen facebook page
  • OR tweet your superpower with hashtag #gotrmke5k
The winner will be announced on Friday, May 24th using a random number generator. Good luck!

About the Race

Join us on Sunday, June 9, 2013 for the Girls on the Run Spring 5K celebrating what it means to be a real-life superhero! Come dressed as your favorite superhero!

Costumes encouraged but not required. Be creative but plan your costume wisely so that you are able to make your 5k enjoyable.

Need costume ideas? Check out or website at GOTR-Milwaukee.org for costume ideas or post your own idea to our Facebook page. On race day, a design-your-own superhero mask and face painting station will help everyone get into the superhero spirit! Music, food, activities and games will make the day fun for all the superheroes in the whole family!

About Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run® is a 501(c)3 positive youth development program which combines an interactive curriculum and running to inspire self-respect and healthy lifestyles in pre-teen girls. Our core curriculum addresses many aspects of girls’ development – their physical, emotional, mental and social well-being. Lessons provide girls with the tools to make positive decisions and to avoid risky adolescent behaviors.

A huge thanks to GOTR of Greater Milwaukee for asking me to sponsor this giveaway! It's going to be a great event, so even if you don't win, you should definitely sign up.

Good luck to all and have a great weekend!
