The Fit Girl's Kitchen

We're coming to the end of the final week of the #fiveorless challenge with Tartan & Sequins, and this last chapter is all about creating balance.

If you have played around with switching up your shopping routine, you already know that it's not sustainable - or realistic - to eat 100% clean all of the time. The key is to find the balance that works for you and your body. I'm still figuring mine out!

Case in point, as I wrap up this weekend, I had a little bit of a food hangover today. I ate some stuff that I know my body doesn't tolerate (red onions, hummus, white bread, LOADS of sugar) and I basically spent most of Sunday feeling like garbage.

I put it in my body, I knew what was going to happen. But I enjoyed eating every morsel of that sourdough.

Noticing the Change

If you have REALLY stuck with the challenge, you will have noticed by now how absolutely freaking fantastic you feel NOT eating processed stuff - and how shitty you feel when you do eat it.

Despite how this may be received, I'm going to do an alcohol analogy here...

Basically, think of processed food as you would booze. Tasty going in, wicked waking up the next day. Because alcohol is toxic to the body. Your body doesn't know what to do with it, so your liver, stomach, organs, heart, brain, everything have to work overtime to rid the body of this foreign substance. It can't use it to nourish the body - because there is no nutritional content.

Processed food = same as alcohol

You know what a hangover feels like. You feel off. Fatigued. Foggy brain. This is how you will begin to feel when you eat clean all of the time and then overindulge in processed junk.

The alternative - feeling a little bit shitty every single day. Think about it - if you put a small but substantial amount of alcohol in your system every single day, you will always be a *little bit intoxicated*. You may not feel TERRIBLE, and you also may not even be aware that anything is wrong. This is just how you are - sometimes tired, a little cloudy, bloated sort of, but still operating on 90%.

If you were to remove alcohol completely from this scenario and allow the body to completely detox itself back to square one, you would notice the difference - Energy, clarity, lightness, operating 110%.

This is why people who do cleanses and detoxes talk about how freaking amazing they felt on them. Because you get a taste of what it feels like to not put shitty fuel in your gas tank.

The Fuel You Choose Matters

Our bodies are machines. Meat suits. They need top grade fuel to perform at 100%. You can cheap out and put the crappy gas in your car all you want, but just don't expect it to operate at the highest level.

When you eat food with chemicals and preservatives that have been added in to increase shelf life/make those soybeans taste more appealing, you are putting junk in your trunk.

I wasn't able to identify my intolerances to things like red onions or hummus (tahini, garlic, chickpeas are all my enemies right now) until I started eating real food all of the time. I was just always somewhat bloated and foggy in the morning. I had a "sensitive stomach."

When I removed the garbage, I was able to pinpoint VERY specific ingredients in things I ate and made for myself and how they affected my body. I can avoid them, when possible. Prepare to feel a little "hungover" when not possible.

But this is all a choice.

How to Begin

Ready to not feel sort of crappy all of the time? Follow the #fiveorless challenge. You didn't miss anything, here it is again:
  • Week 1 - Mind your labels
  • Week 2 - Pantry purge
  • Week 3 - Cook
  • Week 4 - Find your balance

I'm also here for support 1x1 as a health coach with any questions or guidance you may need. I've done this myself - it's a journey. Not an overnight fix. It's a lifestyle change but it's FREE - no points, no crazy cookbooks. Just eat real food.

My friend Heather has a beautiful blog - eatrealfoodnyc - completely dedicated to this topic, full of delicious recipes and other clean eating inspiration. Check it out and follow her on instagram for daily inspo.

(Pssst - the word is out. I'll be joining Heather in hosting a balanced lifestyle retreat at her newly renovated house in East Hampton in Spring 2015! For more information on The Treehouse, sign up for her newsletter here.)

Clean Eating Love

A huge thank you to my other blogger partner in crime for her help in making this campaign a reality. If you haven't read Julia's take on her month-long #fiveorless journey, check it out here on Tartan & Sequins.

We know it’s not realistic to eliminate all processed foods completely from your diet. So the question becomes, what is the ideal balance for YOUR body? You are the only one who can answer that.

Last week I posted this picture of my totally swollen hand and my go-to-detox fix, hot water with lemon:

Fitgirlskitchen on instagram

I truly woke up feeling like garbage. I was SO bloated and gained almost 4 pounds overnight. Now, I knew it was mainly water retention but worse than that was how I felt. The feeling was all too familiar.

I used to feel like that ALL. THE. TIME. Meaning I constantly felt cloudy and bloated almost every morning. I didn’t realize that I felt like shit until I discovered what it felt like to actually feel GOOD in the mornings. Energized. Light. Clear.

My first taste of this out of the clouds feeling came after I did my first cleanse several years ago. I’ve posted on this before, but I did one of the GNC cleanses called “Be Well”. Not a crazy pants all juice cleanse - this involved some supplements and eliminating processed foods. Only whole foods were allowed. And I could not believe the difference it made.

Slowly, I began buying less and less of my old standbys at the grocery store, avoiding packaged foods and staying away from processed junk when I was eating outside my house. It did take time, but I truly have never felt better in my life.

After chatting with my friend Julia over at Tartan & Sequins, she asked if I had ever thought about sharing what I ate on my blog. (She has also been on a kick ass route to revamping her health, which she has documented over the past year.) I told her that honestly, I just cut out as many processed foods as possible - and our challenge was born.

Processed Food

So how do you define 'processed food?' There are varying interpretations, but Julia and I are focusing on this one: Nothing out of a box, can, bag, bottle or package that has more than 5 ingredients listed on the label. Each ingredient should be a “real” food - no chemicals, preservatives or something that you couldn’t buy individually.

Now, there are some grey areas - like if an ingredient is something called “kale powder”. Theoretically, you could powder kale if you had the right instructions and tools. I let things like that slide, mainly because if something has an ingredient like kale powder in it, there probably aren’t any preservatives in there anyways.

And so, as we embark on this quest, we invite you all to do the same, because well, isn't everything more fun with your friends?

Here are the details for our challenge:
Eliminate processed foods from your diet by eating Foods with 5 Ingredients or less on the label

#fiveorless challenge

Our Goal

  • To promote the eating non processed foods, local foods or foods with five ingredients or less

How it Works

Each week of the challenge will have a new theme:
  • Week 1 - Mind your labels
  • Week 2 - Pantry purge
  • Week 3 - Cook
  • Week 4 - Find your balance

How to Participate

  • Check the @fitgirlskitchen and @tartanandsequins Instagram and Facebook accounts every Monday for more on that week’s theme and how to participate in the challenge.
  • Share pictures of how you are incorporating the theme into your week by using the tag #fiveorless. At the end of each week, we will select one winner* and share how they best completed that week’s theme. *At the end of it all, you will all be winners because you should be feeling pretttttty amazing.

So to get started, let’s tackle Week 1.

Week 1 - Mind Your Labels

Start paying attention to foods you buy frequently or eat repeatedly during the week. What are you REALLY putting into your body?
  • Do: Start to slowly eliminate or find substitutes for foods you eat frequently (ie, switch to natural or freshly ground peanut butter instead of your normal Jif, try a sprouted bread instead of your normal go-to.)
  • Share: Show us your most shocking foods that you thought were healthy (also any scary food label) or a smart substitute* you are making for something you eat frequently.

*General rule of thumb is you should be able to pronounce everything on the label and purchase each ingredient outright if you wanted to. (Do you know where to buy monosodium glutamate or red40? Neither do we.)

Best of luck and happy eating!

xo

We all need a little extra motivation in the winter time to get our sweat on - sometimes that comes in the form of a little something new to take to the gym. #treatyoself

Men - this is for you too. This post was inspired by one of my male friends looking to surprise his girlfriend with a gift for Valentine's Day, so read up.

Totally Craveable Gym Bags

Totally Craveable Gym Bags by kat-pummill

I've assembled my top five adorable gym bags that I'm totally crushing on right now and definitely don't need (until I return from Bali at least) - for your browsing pleasure.

5 Adorable Gym Bags to Spice Up Your Workout Routine

My initial advice to my friend was that he "must get her a lulu bag (they are THE BEST) because they are made well and think of everything - like interior pockets labeled for 'phone', 'sweaty things', 'energy bars' etc."

I have two bags from Lululemon - one for my swim gear and one that I've been using as my work-to-yoga bag for 3 years. Both are in impeccable shape, and I've dragged them through the ringer.

1. Sweat Once A Day Bag - Lululemon

Sweat once a day bag | lululemon
Lululemon.com
Perfect for...The Work Fashionista

Why I love it: This bag is most similar to the work-yoga bag that I have which features both a mat strap AND a secure laptop sleeve, which is perfect for hitting up a class before or after work. There are very few gym bags on the market designed to hold a 15 inch laptop - and let's be serious, how annoying is it to lug both your work bag and gym bag around?

Lululemon is also great about labeling features like interior pockets for water bottles, snacks, your phone and sweaty gear post workout.

2. Puddle Jumper Bag - Lug

Perfect for...The Organizer

Why I love it: This bag has been on the top of Oprah's favorite things list for years, and it's no wonder - with snappy compartments for everything, including outside ventilated ones for your running shoes - it's fashion meets organization. The best part is, it's specifically designed to fit perfectly into a narrow gym locker - type A's rejoice!

3. Yoga striped duffle - Reebok

Reebok.com
Perfect for...The Light and Preppy Yogi

Why I love it: Ok so I definitely haven't been a big Reebok customer since the late 90s, but decided to check them out after they collaborated with the very talented Tara Stiles to launch a new section of yoga gear. (These cloud pants are everything)

This bag is perfect for stashing yoga essentials and your mat in one preppy striped ensemble.

4. Bucket Sling Bag - Nike

nike.com
Perfect for...The Trendsetter

Why I love it: This is a super adorable, sleek and chic sack that would totally get me to the gym in the morning. I can't comment on it's functionality except for separate wet/dry compartments and a cross body strap - but the color is enough to make me give it a FGK thumbs up.

5. Spring Tote - Athleta

athleta.com
Perfect for...The Multi-Sport Lover

Why I love it: This is a perfect tote for those who like to mix it up - from gym to yoga to trail. This bag features separate compartments for pre and post workout gear, a secure mat strap and removable shoe bag. A nice size, and a nice departure from the traditional gym duffel.

And one more bonus bag/backpack...

And of course, all of this bag research led me to find so many fun (and functional) bags for my trip - like this one.

Travelling yogini rucksack

Sigh. I don't technically OWN a backpack right now...

Enjoy and let me shop vicariously through you all! I have one more post before I depart for Bali and then I'll be signing off for a bit to disconnect. Can't believe it's almost here!

If you've ever been sidelined by an injury, you know the feeling - you want so badly to go for a run, do something active, heck even just run your normal after work errands -  but you are forced to sit on your ass. For a very active person, it is insanely frustrating.

So what do you do? Your normal routine has been halted. You subconsciously feel your pants getting tighter. How can you maintain what you have been working so hard for when you can no longer sweat?

Double icing is the new double fisting

I typically face most of my injuries in a prolonged state of denial - like, say packing my ski gear on a Thursday, while severely limping, thinking I'd be ok to ski Sunday (sorry Colls - I owe you! #mostunderstandingfriendever).

When I reach the acceptance phase, it is usually accompanied by a round of heavy tears, some Nancy Kerrigan-esque "whyyyy? whhyyy?" and then...crap. What do I do now?

Anyone else catch 30 for 30? Craziness.

As someone who has dealt with multiple sports injuries, I have realized it means something different now than it did when I was younger. Namely, it takes longer to recover (aka scary signs of aging) and I really have to watch what I eat more now if I can't work out, unlike when I was 18 and a metabolic machine.

Here are my tips for how to navigate being sidelined by an injury.

When you are injured and can't work out...

...Modify your diet

If you have reached a pretty good equilibrium with food intake and your activity level, it can be hard to figure out what to eat if you aren't burning off the extra calories. When I am super active, I crave a lot of carbs and I eat them, because I know my body needs the fuel. When you don't burn off excess carbohydrates, your body converts them to sugar, and begins storing them as fat. Conversely, if you don't eat enough protein, your body has a set requirement it needs to retain muscle mass.

My recommendation is to modify your carb and protein intake. I am not a calorie counter, but I know what a typical day looks like meal-wise for me. Therefore, I will sub out normal carb heavy meals for more protein heavy ones, as well as limiting my sugar intake.

And as always, avoid as many processed foods as possible.

...Move around

I know that sounds opposite of the "Rest" in RICE, but after fully resting your injury for a few days, it can be very beneficial to start doing some recovery exercises to decrease stiffness and stimulate blood flow. After a week of having a very stiff knee that was basically permanently bent in place, I incorporated some physical therapy exercises and was shocked at how much better it felt and how much the swelling actually decreased.

My at-home PT setup

Ask your doctor for some safe exercises you can do at home and if you have access to a pool, hydrotherapy is the BEST. Aquajogging is the best thing you can do for a lower body injury to increase mobility with no pressure on the joints.

...Spend the extra time doing what you love

Being injured always makes me realize how much time I actually spend working out. I have so much extra free time, I don't know what to do with myself! I also look to exercise mainly as a stress reliever and really look forward to that endorphin high I get after working out. This was EXTREMELY hard for me to get over in my first few days. I was an emotional wreck.

So I started spending the extra time doing things I enjoyed but otherwise didn't have (or make) time for, like getting into a really good book. Write down three things that bring you complete peace and relaxation so your mind has something to de-stress it and you have something to look forward to doing.

So yes, I messed up my knee. It's sprained right now, and I hope to be back in fighting shape in the next week. This just leaves more time for writing and focusing on my newest venture...

Up next week, look for a #meatlessmonday recipe for warm kale salad and on Thursday I will be sharing with you all my BIGGEST. NEWS. YET.  I am crazy excited about it.

Have a great weekend and #livehealthy!

Cookies. Champagne. Cheeseballs. Wine. Stress. More wine. Travel. Snowstorms. The holidays are here!

Don't get me wrong, it is a magical time of year and I do love it, but the month of December also has a way of magically making all of your time disappear and all of your pants fit too tight if you aren't careful.

Below is my guide to surviving the most wonderful time of the year and coming out on top in 2014.

Holiday Survival Guide

#1 Work out in the morning

December is traditionally a crazy month. It seems like every night there is a holiday cocktail hour, office party, cookie exchange, friend in town or some social obligation that cannot be missed. What ends up taking the brunt of this is your workout routine. That paired with the extra indulgence of these events is what leads to holiday weight gain.

My solution - AM workouts. I look at my schedule for the week and make sure to factor in at least 3 workouts if possible. If I have an after work obligation, I make sure to grab an early morning spin or yoga class. Especially if that event involves cocktails. AM workouts will actually give you more energy throughout the day, and you will feel less guilty enjoying yourself later.

#2 Never go to a party hungry.

This goes for office parties, friendsgivings, Christmas parties and the back to back Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. These things always seem to start at weird times (ham and potatoes at 3pm? Sure!) so I make sure to always eat something before I go, so I'm not ravenous when I get there. Try a high protein snack like apples and peanut butter or toast with almond butter and bananas.

And when it comes to overindulging on spirits, Dorothy Parker gives the best advice...

#3 Take time for yourself...

The holidays are STRESSFUL. So much to do, so little time! But guess what - we're all in the same boat. It is important to schedule time for yourself to relax and ENJOY this time. Otherwise, your stress will just snowball and impact your attitude and those around you. Take 5 minutes in the morning and meditate - instead of listing off the things you have to get done, list the things you are thankful for. It will help you visualize balance and key in on what is really important.

#4 ...But also dedicate time to others

This is a time of giving, and the most valuable thing you can give to others is your time. Whether that time is spent volunteering or even just meeting a friend for coffee so they can vent about THEIR holiday stress, your time and attention is more valuable to them than anything else.

If you are in a funk or bad mood, try this trick: go out of your way to help or compliment 3 strangers by the end of the day. The positive vibe you create is kinetic and contagious to those around you - including yourself.

#5  If nothing else, stop and breathe.

It is amazing how powerful 5 slow breaths can be. I ALWAYS forget this! As soon as you feel anxiety or a holiday panic attack kicking in, just BREATHE deep, 5 times.

Stuck at the airport? 5 deep breaths. Family driving you bonkers? 5 deep breaths. End of year deadline to meet and only 3 days to meet it? 5 deep breaths.

And if all else fails...
